Denver

Pre-race. Please don't judge on the SIZE of my wet-suit. :)

Post race. We are much more relaxed!

So, I'm back from Denver. I flew in on Thursday afternoon. Friday EARLY (thanks for that Kelly) AM we headed to the pool to swim a bit. Wow! I couldn't breath. I guess the difference in altitude was enough to cause me problems. I was watching the pace clock as I was warming up, wheezing like mad, and deeply disappointed in how I was swimming, and it was just a warm up. About 1/2 way through my warm-up, Kelly stopped and said, "Oh yeah. Steph, this is a 25 Meter pool, not yard. That warmed my heart. :) At least I wasn't going as slow as I thought.

After our swim, we went back to Kelly's to nap. Then we drove out to Boulder Reservoir where the "race" was being held on Saturday. It had beautiful views, but the closer we got to the water, the more disgusted I was. It wasn't clear & clean water like I was hoping. It was actually pretty stinky and gross. Oh well.

The next AM we got up SUPER early to head to the reservoir. We were able to watch the sunrise as we prepared for our swim. I did the 1.2 mile race. I finished in just over 35 minutes. Kelly did the 2.4 miles (Yes, she's an Iron Woman) in 1:10. Amazing huh. She's my idol.

Since Saturday I haven't done anything physical. Well, except for test riding a road bike, which I am now in love with. If any of you ever talk to my husband, you should tell him it's okay to buy it. :)

The results are posted here.

nothing this weekend

Ok...no working out over the past weekend, but I did get your call, Steph, about the swimming in contaminated water event, so does that count?

I will do penance this week on the bike and on the sidewalk...starting today with 10 miles on the bike in lovely weather!

Life has been moving way to fast this week with so many changes. Unfortuntely for me that translated into lots of stress and no working out. Should be just the opposite. Lots of stress so go work out but alas no. Next week is a new week with a chance to start over and so I will. If at first you don't succeed try try again.

nada yesterday on the workout

Didn't run or bike yesterday. My penance will be a one hour ride this evening if the rain doesn't hit!

Then off to New Glarus tomorrow, so I may not get to run again til Monday. Call me slacker!

This AM I worked out with Crystal again. I did 25 minutes on Eli, then weights for about 30. The gym owner gave me some great calf exercises. It's amazing. My right leg is the one I was having most of the problems with, and as I was doing the exercises, I found that my right calf is MUCH weaker than my left. At least it confirms (to myself) that we found the correct problem. I can work on strengthening my legs, then I'll be able to run again. The pain is actually almost gone. I can even squat down without too much problem (something I haven't been able to do in quite some time).

Tomorrow AM I'm off to Denver. Wish me luck. Tami, I'll definitely be chewing gum as I swim in the Reservoir! The thought of another open water swim still grosses me out. I'm not quite adjusted to seeing things floating around me yet (meaning dead fish, plants, dirt, fish poop, etc.).

I drove to CDA again, and had a great workout in the pool. 3400 yards. This weekend I'm flying to Denver to do an open water swim with my former college roommate Kelly. It should be fun. It's only 1 mile, so I'm actually not worried. Swimming with a wetsuit will be a different experience for me though. I'm excited!

My morning workout partner is back in town. She picked me up at 6:00 AM, and we went to the local gym. I did 20 minutes on Eli (the elliptical, but I'll call her Eli, it sounds better), and then 40 minutes of strength training.

Prior to my injury, I was doing about 30-40 minutes on the treadmill and then about 20-30 minutes of strength training, but I was mostly focusing on my arms. Now things have changed. I'll just have to settle for Eli plus strength training (maybe mingle some biking in there). I think I'll probably get to know Eli quite well over the next six months.

So I did go out and run yesterday. It turned out to be a really good run. The sun came out and stayed out for the whole run. I ran my fastest mile in quite some time (8 min.). Not that great compared to all of you I am sure but I was still thrilled. Today I will probably not go running but only because I will be roofing. That in it self seems like a workout.

Today I swam 2700 yards (should have been an even 3000 but I ran out of time) and lifted weights for 30 minutes. Again, that should have been longer, too but I had this time constraint. Tomorrow morning I'm running 7 miles at a fairly easy pace. Top of Utah half marathon is next Saturday. I've trained for it all summer but I can't decide if I really want to run it or not. Any thoughts?

Well, yesterday I had EVERY intention to go roller-blading, but I never made it. I did today, though. I made it 2.5 miles. Not very far, but not too bad considering after the boys got in the jogger, I noticed that the front tire was flat. VERY flat. So, 2.5 miles isn't too bad considering I could barely steer the dumb thing and the boys were yelling at me because I was going so slow. Oh well. There's always tomorrow....

A new day

I ran 2 miles on Tuesday and then life got in the way on Wednesday and Thursday. But today is another day and although it is raining I think I will try and get a couple of miles in today anyway. I may be a popsicle when I finish though, it is only about 59 and with the rain it will be quite cold.

Nikki...everyday

I worked out on Monday.  Survived 30 minutes on the eliptical that were so boring I thought my life was ending.  My earphones would not stay in my ears, so the only thing I had to listen to were the clunking of weights behind me and the heavy breathing of the man next to me....not exactly the best sounds to get into rhythm with.

Since Monday I have purchased me a new set of earphones and have thought about going to workout.  It's the thought that counts, right?

I WILL be there tomorrow for the kickboxing class in the morning.  Nothing like learning to kick and uppercut a man in his privates to pump ya up and get you excited to exercise!

Today I made it to Coeur D Alene and swam for 1 1/2 hours. I took a written workout with me, which definitely helps! In total I did 3400 yards. Further than I've swam since college. Amazing. It was awful and felt like crap, but I did it. For those of you who don't know, 3400 yards is 1.931818181818...miles (according to google). Kale and I had a "discussion about how far 3400 yards is.

Anyway, I did it. During the workout I kept thinking I could stop or just do 1/2 the workout. No one would know. But I knew that if I did that, when I went to make my post tonight, I'd have to admit I wussed out. So...so far this is helping me.

Day One

Well, today is a horrible day to start this blog. I did absolutely NOTHING today, so there's nothing to brag about. I met with my Dr. yesterday, and I've been "grounded" from running for about six months. I have to work on strengthening my calf muscles so my tendons won't be irritated when running. Until they're strong enough (he estimates about 6 months) I have to lay off. So, I guess it's going to be biking and swimming for now. Tomorrow I have plans to head to Coeur D Alene for a good swim workout. I guess we'll see if I actually do it.

If you would like to join this blog and add posts, PLEASE email me. I'll add you as a contributor, and you can update us on your workouts. I hope this will be fun. If not...I guess I'll just delete it in a while.
